What Materials Are Available for Square Head Bolts

2026/10/04 07:44

Square head bolts are widely used in machinery manufacturing, construction engineering, hardware equipment and other fields due to their stable clamping, anti-slip performance and strong adaptability. Material is the core factor that determines the strength, corrosion resistance and service life of square head bolts. The mainstream materials on the market are divided into three categories: carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel, which can be selected flexibly according to working conditions and load-bearing requirements.

Carbon steel is the most common basic material for square head bolts, including Q235 low carbon steel and 45# medium carbon steel. Q235 carbon steel features high cost performance, good toughness and easy processing, suitable for ordinary indoor normal temperature and light-load working conditions, and is mostly used for fastening ordinary mechanical equipment and furniture. After quenching and tempering treatment, 45# carbon steel has higher strength, hardness and wear resistance than ordinary low carbon steel, which can meet medium load-bearing requirements. It is commonly applied to the assembly of conventional industrial equipment, and its rust resistance can be improved through surface treatments such as galvanizing and blackening.

Alloy steel is featured with high strength and high stability, with representative materials including 35CrMo and 42CrMo alloy structural steel. Such steel has excellent hardenability and fatigue resistance. After heat treatment, its tensile strength is greatly improved, enabling it to withstand heavy load, high pressure and high-strength vibration conditions. It is suitable for harsh scenarios such as heavy machinery, bridge steel structures and construction machinery, serving as the core material for heavy-duty industrial applications.

Stainless steel bolts are mainly available in 304 and 316 grades, featuring outstanding corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and high temperature resistance. 304 stainless steel can resist conventional humid environments and has good salt spray resistance, ideal for outdoor equipment and humid workshops. With added molybdenum elements, 316 stainless steel boasts greatly enhanced resistance to chloride ion corrosion, applicable to special scenarios such as coastal areas, chemical industries and acid-base corrosive environments. However, it has a relatively higher cost and is mostly used for high-end precision equipment and devices in corrosive working conditions. In conclusion, square head bolts of different materials have significant differences in performance and cost. Carbon steel is preferred for ordinary light-load conditions, alloy steel for heavy-duty and harsh working environments, and stainless steel for humid and corrosive scenarios. Proper material selection can give full play to the performance of bolts and extend the overall service life of equipment.
